Annual bike tour – Lake Biel/Bienne and Lake Neuchâtel

23 May. 2015

This year marked the tenth anniversary of the Club’s traditional weekend bike trip over Pentecost-Pfingsten-Pentecôte weekend. About 20 of us met at the Biel train station on Saturday morning, with a plan to follow the Swiss “Veloland” bike paths in a figure-8 pattern around Lake Biel and Lake Neuchatel. We headed along the south & east side of Lake Biel, hugging the shoreline of the Lake and a few canals. We crossed the “röstigraben” just before stopping for lunch in Marin. After lunch we followed the north & west side of Lake Neuchatel, enjoying the scenic views and the occasional castle and palace. Reaching the hotel in Yverdon-Les-Bain was a great feeling of accomplishment, and we enjoyed a lovely dinner together in the center of town after some showers.

After a nourishing breakfast, Sunday’s ride started with increased headwinds, followed by a couple of U-turns to avoid a mud-saturated forest, and culminated with a restaurant that had no space for us and then many other restaurants that were closed on Sunday. But team spirit was high, and we rose above these challenges, ending up with a late but delicious lunch of fresh strawberries with whip cream in the historic center of Le Landeron. The final stretch of the ride back to Biel was bittersweet, as we enjoyed the last bits of scenery and camaraderie, yet had our sites on the onward journey home by train or car. Many thanks again to our enthusiastic organizers Michael and Jill for their continued pursuit of this annual event.
