Annual Whitsun Bike Tour

07 Jun. 2014

In a well-established tradition, this was the ninth year in a row for the Club’s Whitsun weekend bike trip, and the second time for a circuit around Lake Constance. The fourteen members of our group were a diverse set of alumni, friends and family, which included one current MIT undergraduate student who has a summer internship here in Switzerland.

We gathered on Saturday morning in Romanshorn, and then rode together across the German border to Constance where we ate a relaxing lunch. A short ferry ride brought us to Meersburg, and from there we biked to Friedrichshafen, our destination for the evening. That night, we all shared many stories and fun jokes over dinner and drinks in the hotel. The next morning we rode along the perimeter of the lake, passing by the tourist town of Lindau, and crossing into Austria on our way to Bregenz. After a long lunch break by the scenic Seebühne, we crossed back into Switzerland and continued to follow the perimeter of the lake clockwise back to Romanshorn.

As for me, this was the sixth time that I’ve joined the Club’s weekend bike trip and I can’t emphasize enough how each and every time it is a new and fun experience to meet so many interesting people who have been affiliated with MIT at some point in their lives. If any of you reading this enjoy the fresh air and a bit of exercise, I highly encourage you to give next year’s ride a try. It doesn’t matter if you’re an expert rider or if you have never ridden more than 10km, you are sure to have a memorable experience.

On behalf of all this year’s participants let me send a special thanks: (a) to Michael for his continued enthusiasm in organizing all the logistics year after year, (b) to his wife Jill who selflessly forgoes the biking so that she is available to drive the “chase car” while schlepping all our gear and offering snacks and water refills at various rest points along the way, and (c) last but not least to the Club for generously covering our drinks at Saturday evening’s dinner.
